DLP Bench Test policies before an incident

Prove your DLP blocks real leak paths

Send synthetic data over the same channels employees use — then see whether your DLP detects or blocks the transfer.

We provide ready US/EU/APAC SSN, IBAN, card numbers, documents, and other common monitoring objects. Move them the way a user would: browser form, file upload, email, FTP, cloud object storage, or clipboard.

curl

dlpbench.com · bash
curl -sS -X POST https://dlpbench.com/api/http-post/ -F "message=Hello world, I love DLP. This is my powerful smoke test of the DLP system: a short story with ordinary words and no identifiers. If this request arrives, the path is open."
# Plain text with no identifiers: the request should arrive. If it fails, check the network or an overly strict policy.
dlpbench.com · bash
curl -sS -X POST https://dlpbench.com/api/http-post/ -F "ssn=478-21-3344" -F "card=4111111111111111"
# Test SSN and card: with DLP configured the request should not leave. If you get ok — the channel was not stopped.

If you get 200 and {"ok":true}, the data left your network. Check whether your DLP logged an event.

Tests

Each page below maps to a real egress path. Send a payload and watch how your DLP reacts. Use your own files and text, or pull a ready pack from the library and generator on this site.

On most pages you see the result immediately: our server got the request or it did not. Run the same dataset more than one way — web, email, and FTP often behave differently. Clipboard shows whether endpoint control works on the workstation. Re-test after a rule change, an agent update, and when users get a new file-transfer option. Details live on each test page.

Test data

Ready packs of typical personal and payment data for US, EU, and APAC. The library has tables and files with SSN, IBAN, passport fields, cards, bank details, and other values DLP should recognize.

Nothing here comes from real registries or real people — including the document images. Download or build a pack, then send it through any test page above. Details are on the library, documents, and generator pages.

Tools

Extra free tools for DLP setup. If your product supports regex but lacks ready templates, use ours to teach it SSN, IBAN, or passport patterns in real user text. The MCP server is for automated checks from your AI coding environment.

Examples and details are on each tool page.

FAQ

How does this site help me validate a DLP system?

You send synthetic data over common egress paths and read the result. If the request reaches our server, the policy did not stop that send. If the connection drops, open your DLP console and find the matching event. On most web tests, you also see what we received on the page.

What is the difference between detect and block?

In monitor/detect mode, DLP records events (when the channel is covered). In block mode — if policies are set correctly — the transfer is cut off. Run the same payload under both settings and you immediately see whether detection works and whether enforcement works.

Which send paths can I test?

HTTPS (text form and file uploads via different methods), FTP, S3 PUT, email, and clipboard.

Where do I get data for a test?

Use your own files or ready packs under Test data: the sample library, document images, and the sensitive-data generator.

Is any of this real personal data?

No. Packs are built for testing only. Do not use them in applications or production systems — see the terms.

Does this work with any DLP product?

Yes. The site is vendor-neutral. Watch how your policy reacts to the path you choose — during setup, a pilot, or a bake-off.

The send went through when I expected a block. What should I check?

The policy may be alert-only, the destination may be excluded, or the rule may target the wrong data type. Sometimes a proxy, CASB, or gateway drops the request — not DLP. Align timestamps with the console. If there is no server response and no DLP event, the detector likely never fired.

How often should I re-test?

After a rule change, an agent or gateway update, and whenever users get a new way to move files. On a quiet estate, a short quarterly pass is usually enough: SSN, IBAN, cards, and the main egress paths.

How do I test a network monitor (mirror / SPAN)?

Confirm from sensor counters that the right segment actually reaches the appliance. For a passive mirror, FTP is convenient: cleartext protocol, synthetic file content is easy to read on the sensor. A SPAN monitor usually detects only; it cannot prove block — for enforcement you need an inline path (proxy, agent, or gateway).

There is no cleartext HTTP web form on the site — the UI moved to HTTPS POST. If the sensor needs plain HTTP, send programmatically to http://no-ssl.dlpbench.com/api/http-post/ (service terms).

How much traffic a datacenter mirror actually sees keeps shrinking: TLS, remote work, cloud apps. That is an architecture limit, not a single misconfigured rule.

How do I test discovery on disks and in the cloud?

That is data at rest — discovery and classification — not egress intercept. Place known test files (library, sample documents) in every location in scope. Wait for a crawl or trigger one. Expectation: file found, class/label correct, response matches policy.

Common silence: path excluded; incremental index has not reached the file yet; cloud scanner lacks rights on the container. This site only supplies the files — the scanner is yours.

How do I test GenAI chat tools?

Pastes into ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, and similar apps are a common exfil path (GenAI / shadow AI). Lock the URL and app list in policy. From a test workstation, paste synthetic content from test data or via the clipboard page; if the service accepts files, upload one from the library. Verify both monitor and block — the user-facing message should explain the deny.

Outbound HTTPS calls from AI agents are a separate channel. The bench includes an MCP server for that: DLP sees ordinary HTTPS with synthetic fields in the request/response — not “MCP magic.” Not every product labels this as AI; some only catch it as web. Re-test after client or service-domain changes.

What should I verify on macOS?

Many vendors cover fewer channels on Mac than on Windows. Before you trust block: confirm the agent has the required permissions (often via MDM); which browsers users actually run; and how AirDrop, iMessage, iCloud Drive, and removable drives behave.

Web, FTP, email, and clipboard on Mac can use the same bench pages: HTTPS POST, FTP, email, clipboard. Do not carry a Windows result to Mac without a separate run. Record gaps in your coverage map.

Where to start

Start with the HTTPS web-form intercept test, or grab a ready data pack and watch how your DLP reacts.
